In my very first Zabbix screencast I am explaining the basic concepts of the Zabbix monitoring software. Learn about the dashboard, hosts, items, triggers, actions and graphs. This is a brief walkthrough. In further screencasts I will give a more in-depth view into Zabbix's cool features.
Zabbix is a very complex software that takes weeks to fully understand. One of the most interesting, most complex and least documented features are escalations. They are used to define a schedule what Zabbix is supposed to do when a certain event occurs. Like waking up the system administrator or do some automatic emergency cleanup tasks.
The Zabbix API can be a bit tricky. Per request from a fellow Python programmer you can find a simple example Python script below that walks through all hosts of a host group, gets the "1-minute CPU load average" item and prints it.
